□ Institute for Basic Science (IBS),
together with the University of Science & Technology (UST), is laying the
foundation for fostering the next generation of leaders in basic science.
○ IBS was proud to host the signage
unveiling ceremony for “IBS School, UST” at 11a.m. on Monday, September 1 at
IBS Headquarters.
□
The
ceremony was held to inaugurate the cooperation between IBS, a key institution
in basic science, and UST to cultivate top scientific talent for the future by
utilizing IBS’ world-class researchers and research infrastructure.
□
IBS
School is a degree program provided by UST, an affiliated graduate school of government-funded
research institutions. In this program, IBS will run various educational programs
and IBS researchers will serve
as research advisors to students, while UST will support the management
of academic affairs and conferment of the degree.
○
IBS
plans to operate the curriculum with a focus on internationally leading
research. Major IBS researchers, such as directors and associate directors, will
participate in the program as
faculty members and open major courses that are associated with their research
centers’ major research areas.
○ IBS School plans to select ten new
students from the 2015 school year and allow them to participate in research
projects at IBS research centers.
□ The ceremony was held with 30 people in
attendance, including Hee-Sup Shin, the acting president of IBS (also the director
of the Center for Cognition and Sociality, IBS), Un Woo Lee, the president of
UST, Kyung-Tack Chung, the secretary general at IBS, and other executives and
staff members.
□ “Research institutions representing the
USA and Europe are also being proactive in nurturing future talent,” acting President
Hee-Sup Shin says. “I hope the IBS School will be a cradle for future leaders
in basic science by providing individuals with various opportunities to
participate in research, and contributing to the development of each individual’s
scientific capacity.”
□ “Fostering future leaders at a world-class
institution like IBS is very important and meaningful for our nation and
society. In order to produce more highly-skilled students, UST will make every
effort to develop an advanced R&D education system in cooperation with IBS,”
says Un Woo Lee, the president of UST.
□ UST strives to foster top global R&D
talent by providing hands-on educational experience in actual research fields
with about 30 government-funded research institutions serving as the campus,
which distinguishes itself from other educational institutions in science and
engineering.
