Extremal Combinatorics and Probability (ECOPRO), launched at April 2022, is a research group led by the Chief Investigator Prof. Hong Liu at Institute for Basic Science (IBS). Hong Liu was a faculty and a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow at the Mathematics Institute at University of Warwick. Before that, He was a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow, working with Oleg Pikhurko. He got Ph.D. in 2015 at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, advised by Józsi Balogh.

Introduction of ECOPRO

ECOPRO aims at establishing a vibrant research hub in Extremal and Probabilistic Combinatorics to attract young talents and initiate new collaborations across related fields

Extremal Combinatorics is one of the most central branches of modern combinatorial theory in mathematics, dealing with extremal problems on discrete objects satisfying certain properties. Many problems in other areas, such as Computer Science, Information Theory, Number Theory and Geometry, can be phrased as an Extremal Combinatorics problem. In particular, one of the primary mathematical objects under study is graphs, which can be used to model various real-life network. It is an exciting time to study this field at such a digital era. Apart from the above connections, ECOPRO explores also the interaction with Probability and Statistical Physics via the celebrated probabilistic methods.

Aims

Take on challenges arise from the intimate interplay of the field with other disciplines. Attract young promising talents and foster the next generation of leaders in the field. Host regular visitors and organise seminars, workshop/conferences.
