11 candidates pass the
first phase of evaluation

-      Successful candidates to be appointed in May after the IBS's Open Symposium –

Press Release:
March 12th 2012

Public Relations & Coordination Team, IBS

The IBS announced on March 12, 2012 that it had selected the candidates who have passed its first phase of evaluation, held at the SEC meeting chaired by Dr. Peter Fulde on March 10, 2012.

The selected candidates will go through an in-depth evaluation process, including a peer review at the IBS Open Symposium, which is scheduled to be held by the end of April. The list of successful candidates will be announced in May.

In total, 101 scholars and researchers from around the world applied for directorial positions during the application period (from January to February).

The IBS has established the Selection and Evaluation Committee (SEC) to feature 16 scholars (and nine non-Koreans) from various fields.  The committee is set up to ensure a fair, impartial, and comprehensive evaluation system.

Realizing the importance of implementing a rigorous and comprehensive system of first-rate evaluation standards from the outset, the SEC conducted a thorough evaluation of candidates’, focusing on the criterion of excellence. It avoided evaluating results in order to artificially select candidates from various research fields or regional backgrounds).

Reviewers focused on two aspects of excellence: the excellence of candidates as scientific investigators, and the excellence of their research proposals.

The excellence of the candidates' research achievements, and their contributions to their respective fields were the main check points being appraised, in terms of excellence as scientific investigators.

To evaluate the excellence of research proposals, research themes were first checked to verify if they fell within the domain of the IBS's mission to conduct "large-scale, long-term basic-science research". Once verifed, the candidates' research themes were assessed for creativity and future impact.

Among the selected applicants, four belong to overseas institutions (e.g., Professor Patrick H. Diamond, UC San Diego; Professor Charles Surh, Scripps Research Institute; Sang-Wook Cheong, Director of RCEM and Board of Governors Professor, Rutgers University; Professor Yong-Geun Oh, University of Wisconsin). The other seven candidates are based in Korea: Professor Eunjoon Kim, KAIST; Professor Hee-Sup Shin, KAIST; Professor Kimoon Kim, POSTECH; Distinguished Professor Ryong Ryoo, KAIST; Professor Tae-Won Noh, SNU; Distinguished Professor Taeghwan Hyeon, SNU; Professor V. Narry Kim, SNU.

Four research fields belong to the life sciences, three from chemistry, three from physics, and one from mathematics.

Applicants applied for one of the three IBS research centers, which are located separately either at IBS HQ, on campuses, or at extramural institutions. Two applicants applied for an IBS HQ research center; six applied for campus research centers; three for extramural research centers.

The other candidates who were not selected will remain on the candidate list pool and be reviewed in subsequent rounds of evaluation later this year. The applicants can update their applications.

The IBS will organize 11 evaluation committees for each candidate in March.  The IBS Open Symposium will be held in association with the Korean Physical Society and the Korean Chemical Society during the academic conferences, which will be held in Daejeon and in Ilsan respectively (April 25-27, 2012). SEC members will have closed meetings for in-depth discussions on candidates.

The president of the IBS and candidates will have negotiations over research plans after holding consultations with the SAB in early May. The successful candidates will be announced later in the month.
