2012 Call for Applications for

the Directorship of New IBS Research Centers

The Institute for Basic Science (IBS) was established by the Korean government in November 2011 in order to become a world-class research institute in the basic sciences. The IBS accordingly invites applications for directorial positions that have become available at multiple research centers.

These centers will foster growth in world-class research into the basic sciences, which will serve to advance knowledge and lay the foundations for emerging technologies.

 1. Research areas
    ● World-class research into the basic sciences will focus on large-scale, long-term group programs that are currently unavailable at universities or government- supported institutes.

2. Requirements
    ● All candidates must have world-class research credentials, or must be able to demonstate potential to achieve first-rate research in the future.

     ● All candidates must be able to completely commit themselves in the long-term to IBS research activities.

     ● All candidates must be able to direct and manage their respective research groups.

3. What we offer
     ● Directors will be given autonomy in hiring staff, in organizing their teams, and in conducting their research programs.

    ● Directors will be offered a tenured position at the IBS, a permanent professorship, or a permanent position at a partner institute.

    ● Directors' annual salaries will be negotiated in separate meetings with the president of the IBS, and become effective upon signing of the contracts.

4. Research center: Composition 
     ● All IBS research centers must include a director and group leaders.

    ●  Group leaders must be able to conduct their research while coordinating with their director. Group leaders must conduct their research at the same location where the director is based.

    ● Group leaders shall be evaluated and appointed by the SEC. 

5. Research: Budgets and Evaluations
     ● The research budget will vary according to each research plan.

    ● An evaluation of research achievements will take place every three years and affect future funding and support for the center. The first of the evaluations will take place after five years.

6. Regulations for Research Implementation
    ● Directors are required to work full-time in their institutes. Members of staff at research centers are generally expected to conduct research at their institute.

    ● Regarding publications by researchers who have participated in IBS research- center programs, the IBS must be cited as the primary affiliation.

    ● Application: Candidates can submit their application online to the IBS website at any time.

     ● 2012 Schedule (subject to change)

      - March, 2012~: First round of candidate evaluations

       - May, 2012: Appointment of first-round IBS Directors

      - June, 2012~: Second round of candidate evaluations

       - September, 2012~: Third round of candidate evaluations
