On June 20, Daejeon Mayor Lee Chang-Woo visited the Institute for Basic Science (IBS).

His visit included an excursion to the construction site of the heavy-ion accelerator facility and a discussion to establish a beneficial partnership and active collaboration.

Mayor LEE Chang-Woo, NOH Do Young (President of IBS), KIM Hyun-Min (President of the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences), and HONG Seung-woo (Managing Director of the Institute for Rare Isotope Science) participated in the tour of the heavy-ion accelerator, "RAON," and discussed collaboration plans between Daejeon City and the IBS.

Mayor LEE Chang-Woo stated, "I have suggested to the Presidential Office to visit outstanding scientific and technological facilities in the Daejeon Special District, including the IBS' RAON heavy-ion accelerator, quantum computers at the KRISS, and the K-STAR at the KFE." President NOH Do Young proposed the establishment of a virus research cluster in the Daejeon Special District to prepare for post-pandemic challenges, leveraging the strengths of the Korea Virus Research Institute and the city of Daejeon.

The discussions held on this day are expected to lead to cooperative projects and solutions for current issues, fostering mutual growth and development between Daejeon City and the IBS.
