IBS president to visit Germany and Taiwan

Dr. Se-Jung Oh, the president of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), is scheduled to visit world-leading research centers in Taiwan and Germany over the course of next week. The president will meet with preeminent overseas scientists in order to present IBS directorial recruitment programs, and to open constructive channels for future dialogue and understanding. The meetings will also help IBS managers to benchmark their in-house management system, and enable the IBS to follow mirror the success of other prestigious institutes.

The president is scheduled to meet Dr. Lou‐Chuang Lee, minister of the National Science Council, and Dr. Chi-Huey Wong, the president of Academia Sinica, the leading research institute in Taiwan. The purpose of the meeting is to share ideas on the IBS’s directorial recruitment system.

The president will then fly to Germany to visit research facilities at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research (GSI) in Frankfurt. He is due to sign an MOU with the director of the GSI, drawn up to ensure a close and successful collaboration on a project to construct a heavy ion accelerator. Afterward, Dr. Oh will meet with Dr. Gilles Laurent, the director of the Max-Planck-Institute of Brain Research, before visiting the institute’s research facilities. IBS’s vision is to promote scientific knowledge and to enhance the future of humankind through basic-science research.

The president's overseas visits next week illustrate the need for a cross-fertilization among institutes and world-leading scientists from different countries with distinct cultures. The business trip also highlights the proactive role that the IBS can and must play in order to realize its vision.
