Dr. SungWoo Youn is a leading researcher in the field of axion experiments, conducting precision experiments using innovative resonators to explore the existence of axions. His research is expected to make significant contributions to ultimately resolving a fundamental symmetry problem of the universe and uncovering the natuer of dark matter.

Introduction

The axion is a hypothetical particle proposed to resolve the long-standing symmetry problem of strong interactions (a.k.a. the strong CP problem) in particle physics and is considered a leading candidate for dark matter in the universe. The Dark Matter Axion Group conducts precise experimental searches for the feeble interactions between axions and electromagnetic fields. Equipped with world-class experimental facilities and equipment, the group achieves exceptional sensitivity in its detection capabilities.

Main research activities

The Dark Matter Axion Group conducts experiments to detect the faint signals generated by axion-photon interactions, utilizing microwave resonators immersed in strong magnetic fields. The research facility is equipped with multiple high-field superconducting magnets and high-performance dilution refrigerators, providing an ideal environment for running several experiments in parallel. The research is driven by cutting-edge in-house technologies, including quantum amplifiers (JPA) for ultra-low noise amplification and bolometers for precise energy measurements. Additionally, the group leverages uniquely developed high-temperature superconducting resonators to substantially minimize energy loss of axion signals, along with innovative resonator designs optimized for high-frequency axion searches, expanding the accessible frequency range.
