The IBS introduces a co-directorial system into IBS research centers
1. Background
Research is considered to be particularly productive in the fields of mathematics and theoretical physics when several independently-run research units are merged into one research center, and when these units coordinate active academic exchange. Therefore, a collaborative co-directorial structure could be more efficient in these fields than a hierarchical structure that comprises a director and group leaders. Hence, the IBS has decided to introduce a co-directorial system for research centers in mathematics and theoretical physics, which will be located at IBS headquarters.
2. Research-center structure The research center will consist of three or four 4 co-directors; they can be selected for consecutive directorships through the IBS selection process.
There will be one managing director and several co-director positions at each research center.
Each co-director will have the same authority and stature as directors running research centers single-handedly.
The managing director position will be rotated among the co-directors.
All co-directors will have an annual budget of KRW1.5 billion to KRW2 billion according to their respective research plans.
Co-directors cannot have group leaders in their research centers.
All co-directors have autonomy in hiring researchers (while adhering to budgets); they may hire one tenured researcher each.
Each research center will have approximately four administrative staff members. |
