Scientists from Around the World Searching for Exotic Nuclei Gather in Korea

- IBS Conference on Exotic Nuclei to be held from the 25th at IBS Science and Culture Center in Daejeon -

- New research topics utilizing Korea’s heavy ion accelerator ‘RAON’ expected -

Scientists from around the world who are searching for rare elements not found in nature will gather in one place. The Institute for Basic Science (IBS, President NOH Do Young), the Center for Exotic Nuclear Studies (Director HAHN Kevin Insik), and the Institute for Rare Isotope Science (Managing Director HONG Seung Woo) will host the ‘IBS Conference on Exotic Nuclei’ from the 25th to the 27th at the IBS Science and Culture Center in Doryong-dong, Daejeon.

The IBS Conference is a prominent international academic event in basic science, bringing together world-renowned scholars and influential speakers from various fields to share the latest research trends. Since 2013, IBS has been hosting these conferences to strengthen international research collaboration networks.

This year’s conference will feature 12 renowned scholars from both domestic and international institutions, including Michael SMITH, Distinguished Scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the U.S., and Navin ALAHARI, former director of the French Large Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility (GANIL), to share the latest research in the field of nuclear physics.

A special session is also planned, offering a tour of Korea's heavy ion accelerator, RAON, which began full operation last July. RAON, a massive accelerator, aims to uncover the properties of rare elements and discover new ones. During the conference, RAON’s initial operational results will be shared with the academic community, and discussions will be held to explore new research topics utilizing RAON in the future.

HAHN Kevin Insik, Director of the Center for Exotic Nuclear Studies at IBS, stated, “We have prepared a space to share the latest research findings in the field of exotic nuclei and to expand our network. I hope this conference will invigorate RAON’s user base and bring us one step closer to discovering new rare isotopes.”
