The Institute for Basic Science (IBS) Center for Exotic Nuclear Studies, along with the Institute for Rare Isotope Science, will jointly host the 17th International Symposium on Nuclei in the Cosmos (NIC) from September 17th to 22nd at the IBS Science Culture Center in Daejeon, South Korea.

NIC is the largest international conference in the field of nuclear astrophysics, and the event will see participation from numerous experts within the fields of nuclear physics, astrophysics, and astronomy. The 17th NIC has been organized to share and discuss the latest research trends, including nuclear physics experiments and theories, astrophysical simulations, and astronomical observations. In addition, the first beam extraction results of the Korean Rare Isotope Accelerator "RAON" will be announced at the event.

Esteemed scholars from around the world, including Michael WIESCHER, (University of Notre Dame) and Toshitaka KAJINO (Beihang University, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan) will participate in this symposium. These scientists, numbering over 200 from 20 different countries, will discuss the origin of the universe and matter.

HAHN In-Sik, Director of the IBS Center for Exotic Nuclear Studies and Chair of the Symposium stated, “The 17th NIC will showcase the elevated status of nuclear astrophysics in South Korea on the world stage and provide an important opportunity for both domestic and international researchers to exchange research and build networks.

HONG Seung-Woo, the Managing Director of the Institute for Rare Isotope Science, remarked, “The theme of this symposium, 'Unveiling the Origin of Elements,' aligns with the goal of establishing the Rare Isotope Accelerator RAON. With renowned scholars in this field gathered in one place, we anticipate productive discussions on research plans that will utilize RAON.”
