Director HYEON Taeghwan of the Center for Nanoparticle Research (see photo above) within the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) has been elected as an International Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA). IVA is esteemed as one of Sweden's leading academic institutions, alongside the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which is renowned for awarding the Nobel Prize. IVA is a prestigious organization that currently boasts a total membership of over 1,300, including 265 foreign members.

This marks the fourth occasion that a Korean researcher has been elected as a international member. Director Hyeon has been a globally recognized scholar in the field of nanoscience for over two decades. His research has left a profound impact on fellow researchers. He has published over 400 papers, with seven papers being cited over 1,000 times. In the field of chemistry, only about 0.025% of the papers are cited over 1,000 times.

In recognition of his contributions, Director Hyeon has received numerous major awards in the field of science and technology in South Korea. These include the prestigious Korean Academy of Science and Technology Award (2022), the Best Scientist Award of the Republic of Korea (2016), the Samsung Ho-Am Engineering Prize (2012), and the POSCO-POSTECH Science Award (2008). In 2020, he was also selected as a 'Citation Laureate' by Clarivate and was considered a likely candidate for the Nobel Prize.
