CHEON Jinwoo, Director of the IBS Center for Nanomedicine and Underwood Distinguished Professor at Yonsei University, has become the first Korean recipient of the Glenn T. Seaborg Memorial Lectureship, awarded by the University of California, Berkeley. This prestigious award, which honors the legacy of Dr. Glenn T. SEABORG, annually invites a world-renowned scholar in inorganic chemistry to deliver a lecture. Dr. Seaborg, a prominent American chemist who worked with Oppenheimer on the Manhattan Project, discovered elements plutonium (Pu) and seaborgium (Sg), earning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1951.

Director Cheon, a pioneer in the field of nanomedicine, joined IBS in 2015. Through his interdisciplinary research integrating nanoscience with medicine, he has achieved remarkable results, establishing himself as a leader in nanomedicine. Among his significant contributions are the development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology using nanomaterials and nanomachines, and technologies for controlling neural circuits in the brain. His award recognizes his work in integrating nanoparticles with bio-medical technologies.

Director Cheon remarked, “This award is meaningful as it highlights the potential for nanomaterials and nanoscience to deeply contribute to understanding and regulating biological processes.” He will deliver his award lecture on “Biomedical Imaging and Biological Activity Regulation Using Nanoparticles and Nanomachines” at UC Berkeley on Friday, November 8 (local time), and plans to continue research exchanges following the event.
