The movie takes place in a world where it is possible to infiltrate the subconscious. Dom Cobb, an extractor who steals secrets by entering dreams, is wanted on a murder charge and thus had not gone home in a long time. While continuing corporate espionage, a Japanese businessman offers Cobb a way home. He has to plant an idea to the heir of a competing energy conglomerate in return for clearing away the murder charge. In a desperate attempt to go home, Cobb accepts the offer and assembles a team for the job, which some might say is impossible.
